The Century Shopping Centre
Chicago, Illinois

This large-scale Lakeview area mall renovation of the Century Shopping Center, which began as a vaudeville theater in the 1920’s and turned into a shopping mall in the 1970’s, required remarkable innovation and meticulous coordination by Leopardo Construction. Renovating this building while the shopping center remained open required careful orchestration and some creative moves. Imagine threading a tower crane down through open skylights, sequentially removing the sixth floor and the roof or spanning hanging escalators across the open atrium while shoppers wander below.

• 129,000-SF, seven-story vertical mall renovation

• Positioned tower crane in atrium, with foundation in basement

• Installation of high-rise elevators and transversing atrium escalators

• Renovated the first through fourth shopping center floors

• Phased removal of sixth-floor and roof

• State-of-the-art renovation of the Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema on floors five through seven, which included seven screens and stadium seating

• The small auditoriums were decorated in a neo-art deco style

• The ornate baroque Terracotta facade was cleaned, restored and given new signage

• Relocated seven tenants within the building

• Reinforced existing building columns through tenant spaces
