Leopardo Construction Breaks Ground On Expanded Emergency Department For Swedish Covenant Hospital
Leopardo Construction to Serve as General Contractor and Anderson Mikos to Provide Architectural Services
CHICAGO – March 15, 2006 – Leopardo Construction, a leading construction services firm, today announced it broke ground for Swedish Covenant Hospital’s expanded and renovated emergency department.
The ceremony marking the start of construction was attended by Swedish Covenant Hospital President and CEO Mark Newton, U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, other government and hospital officials, and hospital donors.
“Hospital consolidations and closures have spurred the need to expand our current operations to accommodate an increasing patient census and prepare for future demands,” said Newton. “Neighboring Edgewater and Ravenswood hospitals closed, and patient visits to our emergency department exceeded 41,000 in 2005.
“We also reported a 117 percent increase in ambulance visits from 2003 to 2004,” added Newton.
The expanded and renovated department will include:
- 11,000 square feet of new space to accommodate patients and staff
- Enhanced visitor lounge to foster patients’ comfort in their time of stress
- 10 new additional examination rooms to reduce waiting time
- Enlarged patient triage area to ensure privacy
- Home décor to nurture patients and loved ones
- Air treatment system to strengthen response to public health threats
- Separate entrances for ambulances and pedestrians to facilitate traffic flow
The estimated completion date for the $10 million project is spring 2007. Additional information and concept drawings can be found at the following link:

Swedish Covenant Hospital, located at Foster and California Avenues in Chicago, will temporarily relocate the entrance to its emergency department, effective March 20, to accommodate the construction and expansion of the facility. For the duration of the year-long project, patients will be required to enter the department at 2740 W. Winona Ave. The current entry point for ambulances and walk-in patients and visitors is located at 2739 W. Foster Ave.
Signage on Foster and California avenues will direct traffic to the temporary entrance.
Leopardo Construction will be serving as general contractor of the ER expansion project with Anderson Mikos providing architectural services.
