The University of Chicago Comer II Children's Hospital

Over the last 15 years, Leopardo has collaborated with UCH on over 50 projects. Our services included full preconstruction and partnering with the Smith Group to maintain a $30,500,000 budget established during conceptual design to obtain the project’s certificate of need. This 140,000-SF, four-story with mechanical penthouse project is an addition to the University of Chicago’s new Children’s Hospital. Project highlights include:

• Full basement for mechanical/electrical systems plus emergency generators
• Two 1,100-KW generators feeding adjacent buildings were relocated into this structure without incurring any backup power to the occupied facility
• Foundation systems required sheeting, shoring, caissons, pile caps and grade beams
• Custom curtainwall with deep mullions and architectural fins
• Noise and vibration concerns required a customized procedure for an emergency site shut down
• Custom fabricated precast to match the adjacent structure
• Custom painted metal panels at penthouse, canopies and eyebrows
• Plaster exterior at north wall for future expansion of new building
• Steam and chilled water systems including 175 psi steam expansion loop for future buildings
• Full-floor build-out of Pediatric Emergency Department
